Artificial Reef Project

Artificial Reef Project

EPDA implemented the project in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in order to develop the fisheries stock in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah by bringing concrete forms to the seabed as incubators for small fish and artificial habitats of marine organisms. The project reflects the commitment of the two parties to the UAE’s environmental strategy 2021. 973 artificial reef balls were placed in 9 different locations along the coast of Ras Al Khaimah. The project reflected in the increase in fish stocks and the diversity of marine organisms in the artificial reef. The project was initiated as a recommendation of the 3rd International Conference on Global Warming: Food Security, that was organized by EPDA in 2015. It was one of the recommendations of the conference which was initiated and implemented by EPDA and then cooperated and coordinated with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to implement it in addition to a package of projects and other mutual services that were included in the strategic partnership agreement between the two parties. The global experience in the design of artificial reef has been used as it has gone through many stages and have benefited from the use of the latest designs that proved their usefulness and strength to withstand the conditions and conditions of the volatile marine, dome-shaped design, that is designed by the Reef Ball Foundation , and proved by a number of scientific studies.
