EPDA launches the Water Footprint Calculator

In the context of its endeavor to sustain the natural resources in the emirate, the Environmental Protection and Development Authority in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has adopted a new environmental calculator to calculate the water footprint of individuals and institutions in the emirate to measure the rate of water consumption, as the water footprint is a measure of the amount of water used and through which an assessment of the potential environmental impact associated With water.

His Excellency Dr. Saif Muhammad Al-Ghais, Director-General of the authority, explained that there is a water imprint for individuals, societies and even various activities and is expressed in terms of the volume of water consumed, whether for an individual or a society or for the production of a specific product. His Excellency added that the principle of the water footprint and its methods of calculation is an important research development for a group of researchers from UNESCO to enable individuals to know the rates of their water consumption, the method of calculation is mainly based on the amount of water in each product in each country separately.

Dr. Al-Ghais indicated that the Environmental Protection and Development Authority in Ras Al Khaimah adopted this principle in developing an additional part for the calculation of the water footprint for individuals and societies within the UAE or GCC countries through the application of Estidama, which includes, in addition to the water footprint, methods for calculating the carbon footprint and several other smart services provided Commission.
